Mr Wilson, the expert, reports on an experimental shipment of fruit from Victoria that the pears and grapes were unsuitable, and arrived in a rotten condition. He advises that it is useless to send tomatoes. The passion fruit was also rotten, and the apples were only a partial success. Competition at the wool sales continues brisk, and the prices are steady at former quotations. Competition is keen for medium and lower classes of wools, but prices for superior sorts are barely maintained, owing to the lack of an American demand. April 13. Frozen Mutton— First quality, 4fd, second quality, 3j-d ; lamb, first quality, sjd- Beef — Fore -quarters, 4d ; iiindquar'ers, sd. The hemp market is flat ; 84 bales of New Zealand hemp were bought in at from £25 to £20. No 1 best Scotch pig iron, f. o. b. in Clyde, 41 », steady At the wool sales heavy short greasy sorts are easier ; superior Victorian sorts are slow of sale. Competition is still keen, and prices generally are hardening.
