Meeting of Justices at Feilding

A meeting of Justices was held in the Feilding Council Chambers yesterday morning. Present — Messrs Goodbebere, (chairman), Kmon, Johusou. Lin ton, Hunt, aud R- Mcßeth. The chuirman stated that this meeting of justices had been called in consequonce of a suggestion from the Hon R. Seddon, re the appointment of a Clerk of the Court in Feilding, and extra police protection for this district. Everyone knew how re ■ quisite it was that these matters should receive atteution, especially for the country districts. The chairman then moved 11 That it is the opinion of this meeting, that a resident Clerk of the Court be appointed in Feilding, and that a requisition be sent to the Minister of Justice urging the importance of this matter." Mr Kirton had much pleastsro in seconding tho motion, aud said that great injustice had been done to Feilding in removing the Clerk of the Court from here, and much inconvenience had resulted to foreigners resident in the country districts aud the public generally. The resolution was carried, with the addition that all the Justices in the district be requested to sign the same. Mr Mcßeth proposed, and Mr Johnson seconded the next resolution , which was carried, to the effect that an extra constable be appointed in this district. In speaking to the resolution, the mover cited a number of instances showing the urgent necessity for additional police protection. For example, a great number of complaints *e:e constantly being made of sheep going astray in the Birmingham neighbourhood, and a large amount of driving goes ou at night time. He had himself had as many as 150 sheep stolen from one paddock alone. The thing had been going on for 20 years past, aud an extra constable was most certainly required, Mr Johnston stated that Mr Gray, of Kiwitea, had lost 140 sheep in a similar manner, Mr Hunt said that sheep stealing was going ou not onlj in tho Manawntu, and Rangitikei but also in Hawke's Bay, and in fact all over the colony. Mr Johnson proposed, and Mr Linton seconded, that four clear days be allowed defendants who live five miles from the Court, so as to give them time iv which to prepare their cases. — Carried. Mr Hunt proposed, and Mr Johnson seconded, that owing to Mr Hunt leaving the Pohangma, it is expedient for another Justice to be appointed to that district. — Carried, Proposed by Mr Kirtcn, seconded by Mr Johnston, that a copy of the resolutions passed at this meeting bo forwarded to the Hon R, fcSeddon, with a request that he place them before the Minister of Justice for his consideration. — Carried. In moving a vote of thanks to Mr Goodbehere for presiding, Mr Kirton re ferred to the necessity of these meetings of Justices being held more frequently, and proposed a hearty vote of thauks for the trouble Mr Goodbehere had taken in the matter Mr Goodbehere on returning thanks said, he was sorry there was not a larger attendance present, as he had sent out sixteen notices to Justices resident in the district. The meeting then broke up.
