Sydney, This Day: Tho wholo settlement at Port Sandwich, Caledonia, was swept away. The French Company has sustuined a heavy loss, and the Gnest plantations havo been destroyed. Tho natives aro absolutely without food. Appalling iloods ha ye taken place- The loss is throo millions francs and 20,000 tons of nickel ore were washed into tho sea. Many thrjlhng escapes aro recorded. The Governor has cabled to France for £'20,000 to rohoye tho iminodiato wants of the residents.
