Lapse of Memory

.. «. . (Post's Corresdondent) Mf.lbopbne, February 25. The man now in the Melbourne gac suffering from a remarkable loss o memory, has been identified as Georg William Southern, pninoforte tuner He is mnrmd, but still ennnot recullec his friends, or any circumst.mce preyiou to his arrival at the police station Even mention of his wife and child fai to recall nny memories Dr O'Han declares Southern's affliction to be nr exMiiple of Jocksonian epilepsy. H« Ba j ß _«Xhis is undoubtedly the niosi wonderful case of the kind we hare hac in Australia, and there is no' the slightest shadow of a doubt of its genuineness^ and when it comes to be diagnosed it will form a general topic of discussion among practitioners. I believe it is a case of Jacksonian epilepsj, due to pressure upon the cerebral substance of the bruin, probably the outcome of an old wound that has led to a gradual thick* eninjj of the skull. There arc no bruises or marks upon the patient's skull but bj certain indications, such as an inclin* ntion of the Jodruc to the right side ol the mouth, I localised the lesion of the brain in the broccas convolution, and posteriorly involving the inferior par« ietal angular and occipital convoluiions In the region of these on the s.kull I localised a painful spot, which the patient could not bear pressed. There is pres« sure of the brain which hns caused the loss of recollection, but it may be easily removed by a surgical operation such as lias been done in Melbourne a number of times in similar though less pronounced cases.' ._
