Mr Mills was voted to the chalk and he called on Mr Spencer; to explain^ his views to the meeting. Mr Spencer' said he considered this district most suit* , able for the dairy industry, and was better than |the Tai Tapu district, where land was: let for.' dC2an-aere and they had been paying-over 4d per gallon for their milk, and up to; 7d last- winter. In reply to ; Mr Wilks, Mr Spencer y^SA.t that at Tai Tapu last year they had paid tH«i suppliers an average of £10 Ss'per cowy 1 in addition to which they had se^jajjidai LSO as depreciation account and paid $ per cent on capital.- invested, besides returning the skun milk, estimated to bo worth from LI to L 2 per cow. InJreply to Mr Hugh liurrell, Mr Spencer said that there were various estimates as to" the cost of a factory according to the num* ber of cows milked. Looking at the prbb* able requirements of the district and seeing that he would advise building in' brick, he would set down the cost at LISOO. In reply, to Mr Cunningham, Mr Spencer did not think milk conld;be sent profitably more than five or six miles. On the motion of Mr Banks, it was re* solved, " That iii the opinion of this meet! ing it is desirable to form a 00-operativo dairy company lor Cheltenham «i)d thY surrounding districts, and that, \ Messrs* Jones, Spencer, Mitchell, Mills and BrucV be appointed as provisional directors; to" collect all necessary information as' to support, and then, proceed to the forma* tion of a co-operative company.
