Queensland Rebel Fund

A meeting convened by Mr E. Goodbebere, Mayor of Feilding, was held in the Assombly Rooms last uigbt. Tho attendance though small, wns fully represented by most of the principal business men in tho town. Tbe Mayor after reading a telegram from the Hon W. P. Reeves, explaining that assistance was greatly needed, stated that contributions eitbor in money or goods would be thaukfully received, and the latter would be forwarded by the Government free of cost to the nearest port. The subscription lists started by bimsolf, Messrs J. H. Stevens, C. Bray, and the proprietors of tho " Star," bad already resultod in between £30 and £40 being collected. Mr Sandilands said he thought there should V»e no difficult? in raising from £100 to £150 in this district, and moved that tboso present constitute a Committee (with power to add to thoir number) for the purposo of canvassing for contributions. Mr W. G. Qaybittle seconded the motion, which wus carried. Mr Stevens stated. That in less than three hours on Saturday evening, he collected over £20, and did not meet with a single refusal. Tho Mayor was unanimously elected Chairman of the Committee, Mr Matheson Secretary and Treasurer, an account was directedto be opened in the Colonial Bank. Mr Bray proposed, and Mr Kirton seconded, that the following gentlemen in outlying districts bo asked to receive subscriptions towards tbe fund viz. — Messrs Cuumngham (of Beaconsfield), Pearce (of Oolyton), Crabb (of Waituna), Church (of Kiwitea), Brvce (of Bryce's line), Anyon (of Birmingham), Nix (of Apiti), W. Dickson (of Pemberton}, Fry (of Vlakino) Palmer (of Pohangma), Weightman (of Awahun), Hartgill (of Oal combe), and Wm. and Walter Bailoy (of Taonui). The township was then mapped off into districts, and canvassers were appointed to collect contributions. A suggestion by Mr Moroy was put into force to the effect that a small charge be made for admission to the cricket match on Wednesday afternoou, the arrangements to be left to Messrs Carthew, Thomson, and Roade. Messrs S. T. Smith, Reado, R. F. Haybittle, Hartgill, and F. Keen, wore appointed a Couimitteo to arrange for a Conceit. The Mayor, Mossrs Bray and G. Bar» tholomew, undertook to cauvass tho formers on Rale day. It was decided that all lists witbia a radius of o miles be in by Monday the 27th mst. and that tho Committee meet again at 8 p.m. on that evening, and that as soou as|£3o are in hand, tocable tho amount to Queensland at onco. A vote of thanks to tho Mayor for presiding closed a most successful meeting.
