The Oroua Bridge

The contractors for the new bridge at Aorangi are making capital progress with their job. All the pile work has been completed, with the exception of two piers, and they will be driven within a fortnight. This pile work has been carried out in thorough accord with the specifications, and to the complete satisfaction of the Engineer. One forty feet, and three sixty feet spans are finished, j leaving only three more sixty feet spans ! to do. The whole of the timber used is composed of heart of totara and tuaire, and is an excellent specimen of^our^vw Zealand woods. A noticeable feature in connection with this/, work, is the short length of time occupied in its'construction as compared with the railway bridge which runs close alongside^ - In-^ihe'orie> case we see the advantage is all in favor of this new structure,", the piles having been driven by a ten horse power engine, with a 80 cwt monkey strikin#£ve plbWs a minute, whereas the old railway piles driven some 18 years ago all had to be done by hand power and the length of time occupied in the latter instance was very great. These piles have been put in perfectly true, and to the complete satisfaction of the Engineer of the Manchester f Road Board, Mr Bray. The boklng and^' ironwork have bo far been carried but in a most creditable manner, and the cbh- . tractors are to be congratulated on the " progress made, and the faithful way in which the work has advanced towards a finish. Another three fdr r four weeks should Isee the job done 'with. • .; > '..■■■:
