Birmingham Notes
[FROM OVR OWN COKBK3PONDKNT.] Look out for the 14th — the new ranger and Valentines are both due on that day. The stock sale held here last week caused quite a sensation, and everyone who could get away from their sections were there. Bush burning is now in full go, but I am sorry to state that the burns on the road to Pemberton have been very bad. The fires in Birmingham have been very good, and made the settlers rejoice to see the land cleared in such a wanner. The Farmers' Club held a meeting on Saturday evening at the achoolhouse. Three new members were nominated — viz., Messrs A. Perry, Bainbridge, and Burns. Papers were read by Messrs H. Tolley, senr., and A. Stokes. The next meeting wilJ be held early next month, when an exhibition of fruit, vegetables, roots, and other farm products will take place. It is to be hoped that all members will do their best, so as to make the show a success. On Friday about twenty ladies and gentlemen connected with the Wesleyan Church visited Birmingham, and a most enjoyable day was spent, the ride up being greatly enhanced by the fine weather. On arrival the visitors were entertained at dinner by Mr and Mrs Lay, after which a move was made for the clearing where the township is expected to be some day— at present there is only Mr Moffat's store and an hotel. A picnic was expected to have taken place, but owing to the lack of means of spreading the news in these back blocks none of the settlers came on the ground. About 6.30 an adjournment was made to the schoolhouse, where a good spread had been laid out by Mr and Mrs Lay and Mrs Clark. The meeting held in the schoolroom after tea was well attended. Selections of music, part songs, &c, were given by the Birmingham choir. The following also assisted : — Misses Richardson, Moffat, and Buckland, Messrs Birka, Tolly (2), and Lay. Refreshments were handed around during an interval by Mrs Moffat. Mr Stent occupied the chair, and the organ used was kindly lent by Mr Buckland. The circuit funds will be benefited by about £!■ A team of cricketers from Colyton visited us on Saturday, and were defeated by the local eleven.
