A Smart Public Officer
Tlic guardian of the peace for the Feilding district, has pat in some good work recently. He was out in the back country all day last Sunday, and started from Pemberton early yesterday morn* ing. Arrived in town about 3 p.m. acting on instructions, within a very short time he arrested a man named Thomas George Watson, of Wanganui, on a charge of imposing on the public and obtaining money by false representations. There is another charge likely to be preferred against the accused, of the larceny of a horse as a bailee. A few minutes before the arrest was made, Watson obtained goods to the value of £2 and the sum of £2 iv cash from a Peilding tradesman by means of a valueless cheque. In addition, there are other charges against the man. The great extent of country under the charge of our zealous officer, is far two large for any ordinary, or eren any extraordinary man to work. Surely it is time that the " powers that be," recognized this fact, and made some arrangements for easiag the burdens of so capable a man, either by sending an additional constable to Peilding, or in the neighbourhood, Birmingham for instance.
