Pohangina Notes
[from our own cokbespondent.] Mr S. Knight of Awahun who has drawn a good section in the Salesbury Farm Hamestead Association is getting some of his bush down. Very late in the season, but even if the burn is not ' good, the paddocking accommodation for the first year will more than pay for the ' loss. i Messrs S. T. Hunt and Co,, are about starting a butcher's shop at the function of the yalloy with the Pohangina road, on Mr Hopkiu's section. Mr Pearce. the local blacksmith? j ¥Bfc v «i?iSr^th!? w fßHE*w making the ironwork etc. Mr Palmer's boarding house/is Rejoicing ni the name of the •'Pioneer," and a new coat of paint. Traffic is increasing month by month; t^^pmg^etago|CThg|«(Pmen to and fro would surprise an outsider. The Pobaugina mail-bag rf's do« as large aa was that of Asn^rSfisßrhen^ithe present postmaster Mr G. Cnchton (formerly of Feilding) took; office. ,It is found necessary to enlarge the Ashurst offices — we shall soon see an array- of private boxes for the use of their business men—what do you think of that for Ash.*" urst, papa Feilding ? ':■ ■/ | The Secretary of the Farm Homestead Associations in our midst has written to Government tio ask that one , of these sections in the Salisbury Block belonging to &c Crown he set aside for a cemetery reserve. In all that distance from Ashurst to the confines of civilisation,, no; cemetery is laid out Certainly ■.a ! great, deal of th« country is held on a 999 years lease; but not all;' l*t^'Wili f be tfeertforf^ necessary to provide burying grounds fo^ those who are not eternal lease- holders. The cemetery trustees gazetted-for that portion of ground given by the Manchester Corporation for a public cemetery ha,vjß , had seyeral meetings on the subject, ljut eaniiot induce the settlers to take steps towards improving stfch an unsuitable piece of ground as that allotted. A letter was received from the Surveyor;GeneraF. last week in answer to a request made by the trustees for a suitable site to be taken from a Government reserve. ; It said that although the local body Bhould provide the ground, yet, considering, the- facts of the case, Government would endeavor Jo, accede to the; wishes of the people 1 if pbssible, and asking for a piece to be defined. The secretary, Sir F. ; W. Whibley, was* instructed to apply for about ten acrfe ' near Ashurst and below the terrace. There are some- old Maori graves there, those will also be fenced in if the site i» granted. The public part of the Palmerston cemetery is getting rapidly filled up, and ,beside that it is a long way off, . and now that a clergyman resides at Ashttrst it if, quite unnecessary to go beyond. , ".'*'. ':[] ;. There is to be a meeting ,sßor.sly M afr Colyton of the members of Pohangiria No. 2 Association (W.H.8.). The chairman had a successful interview with the Commissioner of Lands. There ate some men with means in this Association. In, all probability there will be some hundreds; of pounds circulated among our working population next bushfelling season; ' We have had very unseasonable weather lately, There is no shelter around the Ashurst school; it has just receiyed a new coat of paint. , *
