Four Thousand Miles in a 14Feet Boat.
A daring mariner has just reached LonJon in the person of Captain W. Andrews, of Boston, who has crossed the Atlantic for the fourth time in a 14-feet canvas boat. In his account to a representative of the Daily Graphic, of his fourth and longest voyage of 4000 miles from Boston to Palos, in Portugal, he stated that he intends crossing the ocean again in similar fashion next time in a boat made of aluminium. He made 100 miles a day in his little cockle-shell for the first 30 days out from Boston. He fed himself chiefly on meat extract and biscuits called oyster crackers, and he took sleep in the form of an occasional forty winks in a corner of the cockpit, letting the boat steer herself, which she did very well when he had trimmed the sails for the purpose. The first land he sighted was 4 Flores in the Azores,' and at Terceira he was feted by the islanders for his plucky feat. His reception was not so good at Fuzeta, a small fishing village near Palos, where he put in to clean his little vessel. The fishermen refused to send him out a pilot in response to his signals, on the ground that he had ' cholera on board.' He was not daunted, however, but took in his boat himself ( whereupon three shots were fired at him from a revolver. Fortunately, a gendarme came alongside who could speak a little English, and explanations followed which resulted in the weather-worn captain being again feted. He was similarly honoured at Huelva, whence he went to London, and crowned his achievements by offering his boat to the Lord Mayor to be included in the show.
