Kiwitea Sports
Favoured with beautiful weather, these sports, which were held in Mr Mitchell's paddock at Kiwitea .yesterday, passed off most successfully. The attendance was very good, and considerably in excess of former years. Mr Hartgill, as starter, Mr J. Barrow, as judge, Mr Templer, the secretary, and Mr W. Mitchell, the treasurer, discharged their duties in a thoroughly satisfactory manner, and were well supported by the Committee, consisting of Messrs G. and J. Barrow, F. Duckworth, W. Tappin, W. Mitchell, A. and W. Mitchell, and H. Cuiran. Appended are the results : — Boys under 16, 100 yards handicap ; Ist prize 10s, 2nd os. R. Barrow. 4yds, 1 : J. Perry, scr, 2. S. Barrow, J. Munro, and N. Lockyer also ran. Running Long Jump, handicap ; Ist prize 20s. 0. Pleasants, Sin, 1. M. Belfit was the only other competitor. The winner cleared 15ft 6in. 100 Yards Handicap; Ist prize 40s, 2nd 10s A. W. Watts, scr, 1 ; 1. Watts, oyds, 2. M. Belfit, 6yds, Matravers, Byds, Allerby, 7yds, Ross, Byds, and Sanson, 9yds, also competed. A. W. Watts won easily. 1 Mile Walking Handicap ; Ist prize 40s, 2nd 10s. J. Clark, scr, C. Clark, 30yds, O. Pleasants, 40yds, Lundon 45yds, Dally and A. Foster, 50yds started in this event. Foster, who was the only competitor that finished, was loudly applauded, his style of walking being much admired. J. Clark was disqualified for running, and Lundon was ordered off the course for fouling Foster. Single Girls' Handicap, 75 yards; Ist prize 10s. 2nd ss. M. Perry, 1 ; E. Perry, 2. M. and L. Kilgour, M. Taylor, A. Duckworth, and E. Law also ran. Novel Race— hop 30 yards, crawl 30 yards, run 40 yards ; Ist prize 15s, 2nd 5s Matravers, 1 ; Lundon, 2. Pleasants finished second, but was disqualified. F. Foster, J. Keen, M. Belfit, and E. S. Perry also competed. Hop, Step, and Jump Handicap; Ist prizu 20s. O. Pleasants, scr, and M. Belfit, 12in were the only competitors. Pleasants cleared 37ft 7in, and Belfit only got to 36ft 6in in his three attempts. 100 Yards Maiden Race ; Ist prize, 30s, 2nd 10s. Matravers, 1 ; Mines, 2. Foster and Knyvett also ran. Won by a few inches. 410 yards handicap ; Ist prize 40s, 2nd 10s A. W. Watts, scr, 1 ; I. Watts, 15yds, 2. FohrmnnD, 12yds, F. Foster, 15yds, Hooper, 20yds, Allerby and Miitravers, 25yds, also ran. W. Watts won easily by two yards. Boys under 12, handicap, 75 yards; Ist prize 7s 6d, 2nd 2s 6d. R. Barrow, 1 ; S. Barrow, '2. Thirteen started. High Jump for Horses; Ist prize 30s, 2nd 10*. Mr T. 11. Taylor, 1 ; Mr Sfcrawbridge, 2. There were six other competitors, all of whom soon fell out. 1 Mile Handicap; Ist prize 60s, 2nd 10s. F. Fohrman, scr, 1 ; E. Donnelly, 15 yds, 2. Peatson and Allerby also started, but gaye up when half the journey had been completed. The winner had a lot in hand at the finish and won easily by 50 yardp. Back Race ; Ist prize 15s, 2nd ss. Lnndon, 1 ; Pleasants, 2. Four others started. Egg and Spoon Bace, for boys, handicap ; Ist prize ss, 2nd 2s 6d. R. Barrow, 1 ; S. Barrow, 2. About a dozen started. 440 yards Hurdle Race, handicap ; 8 flights of hurdles, 3ft 6in high ; Ist prize 40s ; 2nd 10s. A. W. Watts, scratch, F. Foster, 20yds, A. Foster, 25yds, and Matravere 30yds started for this event. Watts won very easily. A protest was entered by Matravers against the winner for not having sent in a list of performances. A meeting of the Committee was held when the following resolution was passed, That it is with feelings of regret the Committee entertain the protest, but that they feel bound to uphold the rules under which the sports are run. Matravers therefore took first prize, and F. Foster second. Potato Race; Ist prize Jos, 2nd ss. Pleasants, 1 ; Lundon, 2. Two others also competed. Consolation, 100 yd s; Ist prize, 20s, 2nd 10s. M. Belfit, 3yds, 1 ; I. Watts, scr, 2. A. Mines, 4yds, also ran.
