(PEB FBESS ASSOCIATION). Auckland, January 17. The Earl of Burford arrived here tonight, having ridden on horseback from Napier against time. He mado a wager with Wm, Proffitt, bookmaker, Napier, of £300 that he would ride the distance from that town to Auckland, 300 miles, in 66 hours, and leaving Napier on Sunday morning at six o'clock, he reached Auckland to- night at seven o'clock, thus performing the journey in 61 hours. He had freah horses at various points of the road. The Miowera arrived from Sydney at 1.40 a.m. and the Rotomahana at 6-8 a.m., the former thus beating the latter bj three hours 3 minutes. The Miowera made a record passage between Sydney and Auckland of three days ten hours 12 minutes, beatine the Mararoa's previous record by one hour eight minutes. Woodville, January 18. In the cricket match Woodville v. Mnharahara, John Read, aged 21, son of a Maharahara settler, dropped dead after making a run. Heart disease is the supposed cause of death. Gisbouxe, Tlus Day.
