The Panama Canal Scandal

At the hearing of the charges against the Panama Canal Company directors, one of the witnesses lor the prosecution testified that the late Baron lieinaoh received 28,000,000 francs for inducing one contractor in connection with the canal works to retire in favour of another. The case for the proaeontion has now closed. The authorities have made further seizures ot documents belonging to the Panama Canal Company, and these implicate twelve more members of the Chamber ot Deputies, including four Boulangists. Now that the evidence of the prosecution has been heard, the cast) against Charles de Lesseps looks blacker than ever. The Boulaugist and Socialise press accuse President Carnot of signing the Panama Canal Lottery Bill in 1886, although he had refused to do so the previous year, and they urge upon him to resign. The shareholders in the Panama Canal Company have renolved to subscribe twenty-five million francs to continue the Canal.
