« The Manchester Rifles will parade for inspection this eyoning iv the Assembly Rooms. The return match between the Manchester Rifles and the Palmerston North Rifles will probably be fired on the range of the latter corps ou Monday the 23rd instant. The matter will be settled after parade to-night. The Sydney Evening News of 30th December contains the following telegram from Melbourne : — Lieutenant Roland Egorton Bennett, of the 31st Field Battery Royal Artillery stationed in India, who arrived in Melbourne on a yisit about 12 months ago, has never been hoard of since. His father is Mr Thomas Bennett, of Rangitikei, New Zealand. Lieutenant Bennett had visited his father and left on his return to Bombay ; but after many months' anxious tracing it bas been ascertained that he remained in Australia. In a circular recently issued from the Defence Department to the captains of mounted troops, it is stated that tbe Government have decided to hold an encampment for all mounted troops at Palmerston North, going into camp on the morning of Good Friday aud breaking camp on the afternoon of Easter Monday. The site chosen is a piece of land adjoining the river, and is, says the circular, very suitable in eyery respect. The captains are asked to state the probable numbers that will go into camp, and also to fix the time for the annual training of their respective companies. Following is the result of tbe volleyfiring by the different corps in the Wanganui district, and the prizes gaiued : —
