Manchester Road Board

» The regular monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday last. Mr Wheeler presided, the other members present being Messrs Booth, Pearce, Reeve, and Purkiss. The minutes of the last meeting were read and continued. The following correspondence was received : — From the AVanganni Chronicle Co., enclosing account, and quoting scale of charges for advertisements. From F. W. Whibley and 44 ratepayers in Ashurst, requesting the Board not to increase the valuation in that township, as the advance of that place would ba hinderd by increased rates, and the time is not yet ripe tor forming Ashurst into a Borough. From the Manawatu Road Board, requesting payment of the sum of £30 amount expended by that Board on Henderson's line. From R. Lyon and Son, and John Piercy of Ashurst, calling the Board's attention to the state of the drains fronting thdir sections on the Ashurt-Pohan-gma road, and requesting that the ground may be cleared and the ditch widened. From J. A McCrea of Tokorangi, to the effect that he was unaware that Mr Owen had put any pegs on his property, and stating that the erection of fencing on the first line of road surveyed, is well on the way to completion, and asking for a tracing of the road line. From the Land Tax Department, enclosing £285 subsidy for the year 1892-3 payable under the " Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act 1885," and section 8 of tbe ' 4 Appropriation Act 1892." From the Pohangina Road Board, re the necessity of forming a road lending from the Pohangina-Ashurst road, to the eastern boundary of the Manchester Block, between the sections of Messrs Capper and Burne. Also pointing out, that without this road, settlers in the Pohangina Road District residing on sections at the back of Mr Akers' property have no means of access to their land. From Mrs C. Burton, of Wellington, enquiring if the Board has made arrangements with the Railway for forming a crossing to her sections in Taonui. From Gideon Palmer, requesting permission to be placed on the rale roll in i lieu of James Harvey for section 18. From the Treasury, stating that the Colonial Treasurer is advised that the Board can only raise a loan of 5-12ths of the total cost of the Oroua bridge, or say .£1042, without taking a poll of the ratepayers. The Colonial Treasurer is therefore unable to provisionally approve of the Board's application for a a loan of £2500, but he is prepared to receive a fresh application for a loan of £1042. Resolved, That the name of Gideon Palmer be put on the rate roll in place of James Haryey, as requested. Resolved, That the Secretary be instructed to reply to the Pohangma Road Board, that the funds at the Board's disposal will not admit of the road referred to being made. Resolved, That the Secretary write to the Railway Commissioners enclosing letter from Mrs C. Burton, and also a i copy of resolution, re arrangements made by this Board with the Government, in respect of railway crossing's. i Resolved, That it is the intention of this Board to borrow the sum of £1042, for the purpose of providing 5 12ths of the cost of erecting a bridge over the Oroua river at Aorangi, and also that a special rate of one-fiftieth of a penny, be made over the whole of the rateable property in the Boards's District, to pay interest on the above loan, such rate to be annually receiving for "26 years, and to be payable in one Burn on the Ist of April and Ist of October in each year. Resolved, That tenders be called for collecting the dog tax for the current year, and that the tax be the same as last year. Resolved, That the Local Bodies interested in the erection of the Aorangi bridge be notified as to the time the bridge will be completed, and it will be necessary to find their share of the cost. Resolved, That the slaughter licence for the current year be £1, and that Mr Bray be appointed Inspector and retain the fees for his services. Resolved, That a special meeting be held on the 10th of February to confirm the special order re Aorangi bridge. Resolved, That the ratepayers of Ashurst be requested to pay their accounts for the formation of footpaths by the olst instant. After passing the usual monthly accounts, the Board adjourned.
