The Jubilee Singers have engagad the Feilding Assembly Rooms for Thursday, 19th instant. The Dunedin Jockey Club made a loss on last years' races of £1365, due prtneiI pally to a shrmkage in the totalisator I investments. Tho auction sale of furniture and effects I 'of Mr Hadow, which was to have taken I place on the 13th instant, has been postj poned until Friday the 20th inst. In consequence of the land sale on that ! day the stock auction of the Farmers' j Alliance at Palmerston North will comj ruence at 12.30 p.m. sharp. 1 There was a good attendance of buyers at Mr Montague's auction sale yesterday afternoon, when fair prices were realized for the various lots submitted for sale. The Feilding Masonic Lodge will meet on next Monday evening, at the usual place aud hour. Visiting brethren are cordially invited. Captain Edwin telegraphs :— Weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. to-day — Telegrams to expeot strong northerly winds after from 16 to 20 hours have been sent to all places. The sale of land, the property of the late Mr John Manson, of the Pines, Feilding, will be held in the Theatre Royal, Palmerston North, instead of at the Borough sale yards. It is certain, says the Manawatu Standard, that another Minister will be appointed in the Upper House before next session from amongst the recently appointed members. The privileges of the Foxton Racing Club's Hack Meeting, to be held on the 23rd instant, will be sold at auction by MrG. M. Snelson on Thursday next at Whvte's Hotel, Foxton. On Friday, the 13th mstaut, Mr Montague will hold a sale of the stock in trade of a grocer (removed to the Feilding Auction Mart for convenience of sale) as detailed in the advertisement. Our Birmingham readers are reminded of the picnic to be held on Monday in connection with the Wesleyan Sunday School. There will be a concert in the evening at which, the Rev W. Watkins will preside. The output of coal at Newcastle for the year decreased by 350 000 tons, valued at L250.00U. The principal decrease was in the supply to Victoria of 77,000 tons, to Adelaide of 114,000 tons, due to the Broken Hill strike, and to America of 96.00U tous. The Wellington Gear Company, at its annual meeting held last Wednesday, declared the usual 10 per cent dividend. Though the company has been only ten years in existence, it has already returned to the shareholders 102^ per cent, on the capital invested by them. The Birmingham Cricket Club sent a team here to meet the Sandou Club on the ground of the Manchester Club this afternoon. The Sandon men are,|however, gone to play a match with the Halcombe Club, so iv order that the Birmingham visitors should not be disappointed of a game, the Manchester Club has hastily got v team together, and the match is now proceeding. In order to disseminate information with reference to the various pests which are met with in couutry districts, Mr Ritchie, head of the Agricultural Departineut, is getting prepared a series of illustrated leaflets for distribution ainougst the farmers. The first leaflet to be issued wiil be illustrative of the habits of the Hessian fly. Mr George Auyon has been appointed agent for the Fkilding Stak for Birmingham, Pemberton. and Apiti. Mr Aujon has been authorised to receive orders for printing aud advertising, also to take the names of new subscribers. His receipt will bo a sufficient discharge for all accounts due and owing in the districts named. At the meeting of the Palmerstou North Hospital Board held on Thursday last it was proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Saxon and carried, That tho thanks of the Board be given to Mrs Snolsou and the othei ladies who have assisted her in collecting the handsome donation of £577 7s od, aad which has been placed to tho funds of the Board. In addressing the police at Dunedin, Inspector Hickson advised them never to suppress anything they might know in favor of an accused person, nor to be too anxious to secure a conviction. It is not a policeman's duty to extort evidence from those accused, It was their duty simply to arrest the offendors and place the case properly before the court. At the Palmerston North Police Court on Thursday afternoon, before Captain Mowlotn aud Mr Wood, J's.P., Carrol Fredsborg, of Bunnythorpe, was charged, with Vicing of unsound miud and unfit to be at large, brs. Monckton aud Wilson gave- evidence to tho effect that they had examined Fredaberg aud considered that bo was insauo. Tho Bench however, were dissatisfied with tho ovidence anil dismissed tho caso. The Wellingtan Acclimatization Society yesterday sent up 5000 brown trout fry to the Waikunae River from \ the Mastertou Jhatchene--, in charge of the ranger. It is intended to liberate a further number in the Otuki nyer at an curly date. Tbis will about conclude the operations of the society in this respect for the year, and will bring the total number liberated up to nearly SOO/KX) — tlic largest number even reached in any one year— betides vrliich a few thousand will be kept in hand for emergencies. The Society ha ye collected orer 100,000 eggs during tho past year, and over 80 per cent of the ova were ha'ched. When Mr Blundin, of Campbell town, was driving in with a supply of butter for Mr Corpe's factory at Makino yesterday, as he was passing Whisker's bush on the Awahuri road, one of the wheels of the trap completely collapsed, the spokes all giving way. There was a young man driving with Mr Blundin at the time who succeeded in jumping clear of the cart, and he ut once rushed to the horse's head, thus preventing what would otherwise luive proved a serious accident, as, had he not acted so promptly, the cart and its contents must have gone over the bridge. Jfr BJuudin was thrown out of the vehicle, was a good tjeal bruised and shaken, but fortunately no b.oues were broken.
