Makino Notes
» . Mr Corpe's factory has been turning out large quantities of butter lately. He has ml ready shipped this season for London, since the commencement of October, 1356 cases, each containing half a hundredweight. Last week '100 cases were despatched per the Done, and oci the 19th mst a .similar consignment will be sent away per the Tongariro. The boxes are made on the premises from well seasoned wood, and are lined throughout with vegetable parchment specially imported from England, for the purpose. A six horse power vertical engine by Robey and Co, of Lincoln, works the "butter mixer," and ulso pumps up the water from a 45 feet well, whence it is stored in a large tank tor the tuture use. Mr Hosking, of Feilding, erected the pumping gear. Mr Corpe's business is fast increasing, and is yet capable of still farther augmentation ; we congratulate him on the extent to which it has grown, and wish him every success in the future. Mr William Reid ha« a most picturesque piece of bush about a quarter of a mile from the high road, which seems as if it were put there for the express purpose of inviting picnickers to revel there. Adjoining this bush, is Mr Reids's kitchen garden, nestled away snugly in a spot where one would never dream of looking for it. The soil is most productive? and in addition to all kinds of vegetables and fruit trees which appear to be doing remarkably well, we noticed a plot about half a chain square, devoted to the cultivation of raspberries. The canes are from 7 to 8 feet high, are loaded with fruit, which for size and excellence of flavor, we have never seen equalled. To give some idea how these canes thrive, Mr Iteid has recently cut them down some two feet. Messrs Bosher bros sawmill has made a start this week, and timber appears to be coming down readily for treatment.
