Fire at the Lower Hutt
[Per Press Association.] Wellington, This Day, Shortly after midnight a fire broke out at the Lower Hutt destroying Burt's store and the Oddfellows Hall and seriously damaging the Family Hotel and its contents, fiurt, whose store and stock are belieyed to be uninsured, estimates his loss at £4,000. Later. The Oddfellows' Hall was insured for £1200 in the Commercial Union. The building and contents were valued at £1500. Burt valued his buildings at -£200 C, but had not a penny of insurance on either, About twelve months ago he let the policies lapse, preferring to take his own risk. The fire broke out in a dwelling house adjoining the store, and the inmates, of whom there were a large number, had a narrow escape. Burt thinks the outbreak was caused by rats eating matches, as a large quantity of matches were stored in the room in which it is supposed the fire started. The Hutt bridge was on fire several times, but the Brigade stayed the flames.
