Birmingham Notes
[FROM OUB. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The lone-looked for distribution of prizes and picnic of the children attend* ing the public school was held last Friday afternoon. The weather was very cold, and a heavy down pour of ram took place in the afternoon, causing many of the children to be taken home— very much against their wills. Altogether, the youngsters and their friends enjoyed the outing. The telephone is now an accoraplised fact, and it is to be hoped will be very useful to the inhabitants of this and adjoining districts. All the storekeepers have prepared large stocks of goods and various articles suitable for this festive season. The exodus from the bush has commenced, and there is a continuous stream of passengers making their way to the large towns and on visits to their relatives and friends living m other parts of the Island. Glad to see that the " lake " has at last disappeared, and when the holes in the roadway are filled in with some good road metal Birmingham will compare with other districts, as far as roadways are concerned. The canvasser for shares in the Farmers' Alliance seems to have done a very large business with the settlers, nearly all having taken up shares in the company. The local sale yards for stock consigned to the company are to be completed as soon as possible, and as there are thirty miles of country round from whence supplies can be sent, it is predicted that the sales here will be on a.s large a scaie as at Palmerston A great outcry is being made by the settlers from all parts of the district at the inadequate accoinodation provided at the Feilding Station for the reception and sending away of the wool sent down to be forwarded to Wellington for sale. It seems incredible that the Railway Officials haying the management of the goods traffic do not alter the system, and haye proper facilities for carrying out this ever-increasing wool business. The farmers should be helped in every way by the railway, and not have hinderances and annoyances to put with. The Kiwitea Literary Society held a meeting at the Town Hall on Friday evening last, the day of the school picnic, instead of Saturday as it was thought that many would be in town and look in to see the sort of entertainment proyided by the members, The hall was full to the doors. Mr Birks occupied the chair. The adjourned debate" Town v. Country" life was opened by Mr Morton, who spoke in fayor of the country. Mr Harry Tolley replied, and rebutted some of the false notions expressed by various speakers as to the disadvantages and annoyances supposed to exist in towns as against the country. Mr Birks summed up, but as it was evident from the outset the Birminghamites were happy and contented with their surroundings and had not anything to complain of. The vote went for •' Country Life." Songs and recitations filled up the re* mainder of the evening Mr Tolley sang the eyentful history of " Alonzo the Brave and the Fair Imogen." Miss Moffatt recited "The Adventures of a Young Man and a Facinating Toung Lady in a Railway Carriage." Miss Buckland sang a very pretty song, but the title was not given. Mr Moss recited a very exciting episode in the Indian Mutiny, and was loudly ap plauded. Mr and Miss Tolley sang a duet entitled " Very Suspicious." Miss Lowes' song was highly appreciated. It is proposed to have a picnic of the mem* bers in January somewhere on the banks of the river. The society, at the closejef the proceedings, adjourned for 1 month. On Christmas Day there will be a good selection of music at the services of the Wesley an Church.
