Kiwitea Road Board

The customary monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday last. Present— Messrs Taylor (Chairman), Jones, Beid, Homer, Morton, Williamson and Shannon. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Cunningham presented a petition signed by about 40 ratepayers in the Waituna and Beaconsfield districts, praying that if a ranger is appointed he be given no authority in their neighborhood, as the danger which might happen to the fences from long grass catching fire, was of greater consideration than wandering cattle. The following correspondence was dealt with : — From the Pohangina Road Board, requesting that this Board will call for tenders for the completion of the Oroua Valley road. From C. A. Bull, asking permission to fall the bush on road line fronting his section 10, block 2, Ongo. From C. B. Swainson and five others, drawing the Board's attention to the state | of the track through the Pakihikura Village reserve. I From J. P. Anderson, acting for Mrs Hastie, asking for payment for felling bush on the road line fronting her secI tion. From W. J. Vile, calling attention to the bad state of Hayns' road. From the Treasury owning receipt of draft for £396, 4s 2d, also forwarding statement showing how the loan of £2133 15s lOd had been apportioned. From F. Rink, requesting an extension of time for the completion of his road contract, on account of the scarcity of labour. From Peter Murphy, stating that he is the owner of section No 1, Birmingham, and objected to the thirds accruing therefrom, being applied as desired by Oliphant and another, as per correspondence read at the Board's last meeting. Messrs Lowes and Hodges waited upon the Board, and offered to advance the sum necessary for the completion of the Oroua Valley road, on the security of thirds accrued and accruing. The Chairman remarked that in addition to the Government grant, and thirds already accrued, a further sum of about £100 would be needed. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Morton, That tenders be called for metalling the Oroua Valley road through to the Feildmg Block in two contracts, said tenders to be in by next meeting of the Board. One tender to the Oroua river from the Kimbolton road, and the other from the Oroua river to the Feildmg Block. Resolved, That Mr Rink be allowed till the end of January to complete his metalling contract on the Kimbolton road. Resolved, That the name of Mr C. A. W. Monckton be put on the rate roll in place of A. E. Rathff. Resolved, That Mr Vile's letter re the formation of Hayns' road, be left to the Engineer to deal with. Resolved, That the petition of Messrs Swainson and others, re track through the Village Reserve be referred to the Government, with a recommendation that the work be started at once, as it is a Government reserve, and all the adjoin* ing land is now settled. Resolved, That tenders be called for five hundred loads of metal for Waituna Ward, to be delivered as instructed by the Engineer. Resolyed, That Mr Bull's application re road line be granted. Resolved, That in future all applications for charitable aid, be first submitted to and approved of by some member of the Board, before they can be entertained. Resolved, That the following tenders be accepted :— Waipuru road, James Joe, £135 ; Waituna Valley, James Joe, £46, and 26s per cubic yard for metalling; Peep-'o-Day road, Dougherty, 11s per chain ; and O'Leary and Meagar's tender for metalling Kimbolton road at 4s 5d per yard be accepted, conditionally that they accept progress and final payments when the Board receive the same from the Government. ' Resolved, That the appointment of a ranger be referred to a sub committee consisting of Messrs Taylor, Jones, and Morton, to draw up conditions and submit them for consideration at the next meeting of the Board. Resolved, That the Engineer and Warden for the Ongo and Hautapu Wards prepare plans and specifications for the expenditure of £1,666 13s 4d in the Ongo Ward, and £1,333 6s 8d in the Sandon Small Farms Block, and that tenders be called for, the same to be in by the next meeting of the Board. The regular monthly accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
