Pohangina Road Board
♦- This Board's regular monthly meeting was held last Saturday. Present — Messrs Lucas (chairman), Arbon, Burton, Dickin, and Richards. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the following correspondence was then dealt with : — From George Duncan, roadman Apiti, re the wages paid by the Board. From Land and Survey Office, re the making of horse roads in the Oroua Coal Creek Block. From John Colville, Palmerston North, quoting prices at which he is prepared to supply dog collars. From E. Hopkins, Pohangina, re drain fronting his section. From James Millar, Apiti, drawing the Board's attention to a white pine tree outside his fencing line. " ' From Mr Haynes forwarding his report on the Valley road slips, in it he stated that a large quantity of earth was likely to come down, and that' it would cost a considerable sum to make the road secure. The metal road is in very fair, condition, but the water tables require more attention. The track from Pollock's road to the Oroua river is very bad in places, owing to streams of water running across the track and keeping it in a muddy state, and the Engineer had instructed T. Taylor, to clean out and place tree fern drains across track, and cut water table on the upper side to drain the water into the tree fern drains. There is also a slip opposite Mr Brown's property which requires attention, and three' trees lying across the track ought to be removed ; roadman Taylor was also instructed to Ml up some deep ruts on the Pohangina road with broken stone. '■ Mr Dickin stated that the Fitzherbert Road Board was getting its advertisements inserted at far less rates than this Board was being charged. From W. J. Port, asking that his name may be placed on the rate roll, instead of John Henley for section 5 block 14. From the Wanganui Harbor Board agreeing to lease this board section 11 Pohangina township at a rental of Is per annum. From Land Office, forwarding schedule of accrued*thirds. Resolved, That notice be given that it is the intention of this Board on Saturday the 14th day of January next, to levy a special rate of 3£d in the £ on the whole of the rateable value of the No 2 Ward in this Board's District; (Crown and Native Lands excepted) such rate to be annually recurring for a period of 26 years, and to be payable at the Board's Office on the Ist day of January and July in each year. Resolved, That this Board urge upon the Manchester Road Board, the necessity of forming a road leading from the Pohangina-Ashurst road between Capper's and Burna's sections to the eastern boundary of the Manchester Board District, in order to give access to certain sections in the Pohangina Road District. Resolved, That the Kiwitea Road Board, be requested to call for tenders at their next meeting for that portion of the Oroua Valley road in the Pohangina District, which the Government have notified their intention of subsidizing, and state the proportions this Board is to receive. Resolved, That the Secretary be instructed to write to the Commiesiqner of Crown Lands, for the necessary forms to be sent to the settlers in No 2 Ward for the thirds due to them, to be set aside for the payment of interest on loans under the " Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886." Resolved, That the name of W. J. Port be placed on the rate roll in lieu of that of John Henley for section 5, block 14. Resolved, That all out standing rates be sued for if not paid before the next meeting of this Board on the 14th of January next. Resolved, That the Secretary write the Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking him if the .£IOOO and £500 that have been placed on the estimates for the Oroua Coal Creek Pohangina roads and the Totara Reserve are available. Resolved, That applications be invited for the right to collect the dog tax for the year 1893, applicants to state the amount they are willing to pay for this right. All sheep and cattle dogs at 2s 6d, other dogs at 10s per annum. The usual monthly accounts Were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned. . ■ ■. ■
