Obituary— Dr Werner Siemens, the well-known electrician of Hanover, aged 76; also, Fred Leslie of the Gaety, actor of London. It is supposed that the fall in the Broken Hill stock was brought about in Sydney and Melbourne owing to one of the Melbourne banks throwing up on the market a large number of shares in the Proprietary Mine. St. .PfiTEBSBUBO, December 6. Several outrages by brigands are reported from Poland. One family of six was murdered and robbed in a village hotel. The murderers have been arrested. Madbid, December 6 Nine of the Xeres Anarchists were sentenced to imprisonment for life, and four to 20 yeai's solitary confinement. Calcutta, December 7. The Chitral tribesmen attacked a Cashmere regiment in the British camp at, Gor, but were repulsed with a loss of 50, and pursued for miles. Cairo, December 7. The Mahdi has sent a force to attack Kassala, and reinforce Osman Dioga, who is supposed to be meditating an attack on Tokar. Washington, December 6. The President, in his message to Congress, declares the prosperity of the country is unprecedented, and that wages were never so high, which he claims is due to Protection. The differences with Germany and England regarding Samoa had been ad* justed, and also the Behring Sea dispute.
