The Palmerston Mayoralty
Judging from the following remarks of the Manawatu Times the last Palmerston Mayoral election was not a success iv the eyes of Borne people : — "The new Mayor has a difficult task before him, as the Council is at present constituted, but a little consideration of the opinions of others may enable him to make his term of office fairly pleasant. In this connection we trust that those Councillors who have declared their intention of resigning will not do so, as such action will not tend to improve matters. The newly-elected Mayor should have fair treatment." The Palmerston Standard on the other hand aaya:—"We have no doubt that he (Mr Edwards) will prove the prognostications of his opponents that he will not be able to work amicably with the present Council, to be incorrect. Possessed of indomitable courage, and a capacity for work seldom met with by public men, he has undoubtedly earned his present position, and it is no discredit to be defeated by a man who has such a capital record as Mr Edwards." Both papers very wisely urge that the Councillors should endeavour to assist the new Mayor in the performance of his duties.
