Police Court
♦ Yesterday morning, before Messrs Eirton and Haybittle, J.P.s, the following cases, were dealt with :— Henry Charles Conyers, alias Rogers, alias Munro, was charged by the police with having insufficient lawful means of support at Feilding on the Ist instant. The evidence of the police was to the effect that the accused was laying wagers on the racecourse, and when he lost was unable to cay up. After hearing* the evidence, this case was dismissed. The accused was further charged with using obscene language at the same time and place. Accused pleaded guilty. After hearing the evidence of the arresting constables, the Bench sentenced the accused to six months' hard labour in the Wanganui gaol. James Blake was charged with having insufficient lawful means of snpport at Feilding on the Ist instant. Mr Prior appeared for the accused. Two. Maoris gave evidence to the effect that they made wagers with the accused on the racecourse ! but were unable to obtain any tickets or a refund of their money. Constable Tuohy deposed to the arrest of the accused, and on searching him found between £8 and £4 upon him. Witness further stated that he had known the accused for the past three years as a common spieler. The Benon sentenced the accused to three months in Wanganui gaol. This morning before Messrs Eirton and Haybittle, J.P.s, on the certificate of Doctors Sorley and Mouckton, Charles J. Wickham, carrier, of Feilding, was committed to the Wellington Asylum for medical treatment.
