A Clergyman who sold his surplus butter has been fined at Gloucester, in a nominal sum, for using unstamped scales without fraudulent intent. A breach of promise case will occupy the attention of Mr Justice Williams in ihe Dunedin Supreme Court this week, the plaintiff being a domestic servant and the defendant a tram way serviceman. Damages are stated at £350. We understand that Mr S. M. Baker intends entering an action against tno Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association for the recovery of the first prize in thoroughbred horses. It will be remembered that Mr Biker entered a protest against Forester bezng awarded first prize, which the Stewards dismissed. Manawatu Times, The chairman of the Auckland Board of Education says he would " rather be an agricultural labour than an inspcctoJ under the Board." He was sick ot afctacks on the inspector. As soon as there was an unfavourable report from any school, the teacher either wanted a fresh examination or aa inquiry into the conduct of the inspector who conducted the examination.

Habitual drunkards in Norway and Sweden are cured by a most ingenious system of treatment. Wollerman has informed the Standard that he feels compelled to resign bis seat in the Palmerston Borough Council for No- 2 Ward, owing to the multiplicity of his business engagements. Since his residence in Feilding, Mr Wollerman has attended the meetings of the Council at his own expense, and his eemal countenance will be missed at the horseshoe table. The Chicago Exhibition buildings will be opened on May 1, by the Marquis de Vpraqua, a descendant of Columbus. The Marquis is too old to go to Chicago, but he will set in motion the steam machinery in Jackson's Park, Chicago, by pressing an electric button at Madrid placed in direct communication with the World's Fair by submarine cable. As a London correspondent remarks, what a change from the days of Christopher Columbus Mr Montague will hold his opening sale in his new mart on Friday the 9th instant when he will sell the privileges of the Feilding Sports, periodicals for the Feilding Club, and a quantity of sundries as detailed in the advertisement. Mr Montague also inserts a business notice in which he informs the public that he is prepared to undertake all kinds of auctioneer's and commission agent's work, make adyances on goods entered for sale, supply furniture on time payments, lend money. Auction sales will be conducted in the Feilding mart every Friday afternoon, .and Mr Montague intends by having new lines of all sorts of goods at command to place before the public, to make his establishment the most popular commercial institution in the North Island. Mr Montague claims to be a business man, and he means to do his utmost to assist in the progress and development of Feilding and the surrounding districts, and hopes by tact, energy, and honesty, of purpose to receive a liberal share of public support.
