The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1892. Disease in Sheep
The following extract is from the Napier Telegraph :— " A Southland sheep-farmer has sustained some heavy losses through lung worm in his sheep, but lately another disease has manifested itself. He says, ' Last week a four-tooth ewe was found dead, lying in a perfectly natural position (as indeed they are nearly always found), the wool partting from the skin at the least touch. My shepherd examined this ewe carefully, and on opening the windpipe there was no appearance of the usual lungworm, but, but strange to say, there were two grub-like insects of a yellowish color, half-an-inch long, and the thickness of a lead pencil. Unfortunately the specimens were lost. This is the first time that I have seen or heard of such a thing infesting sheep.'," This is, doubtless, the same disease which caused such a mortality among sheep in this district last year, and possibly the secret of its cure may now be discovered if the grub-like insect mentioned is the chief cause. The Marton Advocate publishes the following sensational item : — " Four days ago a labouring man came from Peniberton to Feilding to cash a cheque, value £42. Day after day went by while his mate in charge of the work anxiously awaited his return. Yesterday (Tuesday) the anxious one rode out and found his mate at an hotel, moneyless and drunk. There being some money due to the pair from the Kiwitea Road JBoard, the sober partner went at once to impound it, to indemnify himself for his portion of the cheque washed away. That it is possible for a man to spend £42 in four days, in drink, and render him- 1 self also, for that period, an idiot, is a disgrace to our licensing laws." As this contains a grave charge against the hotels of Feilding, which have hitherto borne the character of being guiltless of the atrocity of "lambing down," we trust steps will be taken to clear up the affair, and, if possible, remove the implied stigma.
