FEILDING J.C. SPRING MEETING.
FIRST DAY.
The spring meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club was opened yesterday with wretched weather, some of the events being run in a regular downpour of rain, which had a very unfavourable effect on the attendance, only gome 600 or 700 spectators being present. The going was sloppy and the times slow, but the exceptionally large fields and close finishes made the racing very enjoyable throughout. The club have further improved the fixings of the course by erecting eight more stalls, also a ladies cloak room, and it almost appeared as if the roof on the grand stand had been put on in anticipation of the dreadful wet day, spectators finding it a priceless boon. Everything as usual went without a hitch of any kind. The starting of Mr E. Wood was excellent, likewise the handicapping, but Mr Henry has established such a name, by his neat adjustments of weights, that it seems useless to comment. The stewards and secretary all worked like stewards should, and the success of the meeting is of course due to the masterly manner in which they worked at their respectiye duties. Mr E. Jackman had the misfortune to lose his mare Daybreak in the first Handicap Hack Hurdles by her jumping into the course fence, the rail of which completely pierced her through and she had to be destroyed. The sum of £2498 was put through the machine during the day. The fields being so exceptionally large all through made a larger scope for backers to spread their investments, over and naturally the dividends were large. The Feilding Brass Band was in attendance and enlivened the proceedings between the showers by a varied programme of excellent music. Mr B. F. Haybittle conducting in his usual able manner.
