Apiti Notes

[FBOM OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT. 1 A meeting of ratepayers was 'held in Mr McKenzie's wool shed on the 16th instant for the purpose of discussing the schedule of [proposed works. Mr R. L. Burton was voted to the chair. The opinion of the meeting seemed to be that the amount of the loan should only be about £600 and after some discussion the following schedule was adopted, trimming and metalling Main road, £350 ; formation of Upper Gross road west, £50 ; formation Mam Gross road east, £120; formation Main Ridge road, £50 ; formation of Back road, £50; total, £620. The meeting then discussed the mail question, and as the Government had declined to grant a mail seryice three times per week, to endeavour to get the mail carried into Apiti on the day it leaves Feilding, and thus save one day. Shearing has commenced here. The showery weather we have had for the last fortnight has kept thia work back a great deal. The school will be opened on Monday next. The roads are now dry and suitable for vehicles. You will see that the meeting only reckoned on spending £620 for road making, but had they seen your paper in which you point out the extravagence of the Board in paying ten per cent to the Engineer, I do not believe they would have voted for so much. Only £558, for work, and £62 for the Engineer, is out of all proportion.
