ROAD BOARDS AND WORRYING SHEEP.

TO THK EDITOR OF THE STAH Sir, — You have from time to time recorded in the Star, and commented on the depredations of sheep-worrying dogs in this and neighboring districts, and I have no doubt that local bodies, by making the Dog Tax so low are mainly the indirect cause of so much sheep- worrying. , In my opinion, and I have some right to speak on the subject, the Dog Tax should never be leas than 10s per head, for when it is much lower a pack of useless and mischievous dogs will be reared who pass their time worrying sheep. When the tax is low, perhaps tax collectors may not be sufficiently well paid for their services, and we need not wonder if they are a little remiss in their duties. A few dogs, and they the very worst, will always escape taxation while a Board entrusts the collection of the tax to one collector. It would be ever so much better done if one or two farmers in each ward took up the tax in their respective wards. I hope that our wardens will, for the benefit of all— even of the dogs themselves — make the tax a stiff one. I am, etc., : -\ A StIFFERER.
