Volunteer Items
The Manchester Riflea paraded for inspection on Thursday night. There was a very large attendance, very few men being unaccounted for. The usual exercises were gone through and the men acquitted themselves very creditably. A curious thing happined at the recent N.S.W. rifle shooting matches. Private J. Macintosh, who should have won his match, had to take second money for scoring a miss, although the " miss " was a bull's eye. He had fired at the wrong target, and hit it fair in the middle, but the shot went to the credit of the other man, who missed it altogether. The flag at the target at which Mclntosh should have fired of course showed a miss, and Mclntosh lost his prize. Volunteer Parkes, of the Palnjerston North Rifles, has won Captain Fitzherbert's trophy. His last highest score was 66. Owing to the resignation of acting Color Sergt. Eyans who at his own request, has gone back into the ranks, the following acting appointments have been made, Sergt. Milson, to be acting Color Sergt. ; Corporal Kitchen, to be nctin" Sergt. Volunteers G. H. Saywell and Fanthorpe, to be acting Corporals.
