Opening of the Colyton Saleyards

There was a very large attendance of settlers present at Mr Abraham's opening sale at these yards on Tuesday afternoon last, and the entries of cattle and sheep were very large which may be accepted as an augury of good import for future. Before commencing the sale, Mr Abraham addressed the company present, in a few well chosen words, and spoke of the necessity for increasing the number of -saleyards in this district, and drew attention to the splendid stretch of country for which the Colyton yards would be so convenient. He also mentioned the fact, that in a very short time Mr Manson's property of nearly 3000 acres would be disposed of, and cut up into convenient sized holdings ranging from 130 to 250 acre lots. In the course of the afternoon, those of the company who were not of the teetotal persuasion, drank success to the new venture. We might add that already, as result of the opening of these saleyards, property in the immediate yicinity has considerably increased in value. Mr B. S. Abraham reports on the sale as follows : — Large entries came forward aud there was a big attendance of buyers. Bidding for young cattle was spirited, but dragged somewhat for other sorts. For hoggets there was a brisk demand, and ewes and lambs showed a tending to improve in value. With the exception of two small pens of cattle and one pen of 50 shorn wethers, I cleared the yards at prices satisfactory to the vendors. My next sale at Colyton will be held on the 26th November, and I shall now be glad to receive entries. I quote as under : — Forward cows, £4. 4s ; cows and calves (poor) £3 2s 6d ; 18-months 2-year steers, £2 19s ; mixed yearlings, £2 2s to £2 4s ; mixed 18 months, £2 9s ; springing heifers, £3 15 ; dairy cows, £i 12s 6d to £5 Is ; forward wethers (shorn), 10s 9d ; mixed hoggets, in wool, from 10s to 13s sd ; wether hoggets, 12s 9d; Romney hoggets, 13s sd ; ewes and lambs, 13s sd, Ids 5d and 16s ; old and culled ewes and lambs 7s 8d to 10s ; upstanding hack £8.
