Feilding Borough Council
I The regular monthly meeting of the t Council was held on Thursday last. ; Present— Messrs W.G. Haybittle (Mayor) Chamberlain, Sandilands, Goodbehere> Carthew, Fowles, Morey, Gould, J. C, j Thompson and Lethbridge. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The report of the Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £79 15s 2d be passed for payment. The Public Works Committee reported as follows: — 1. With reference to Mr Wollerman's application, the Committee recommended that a dram pipe be placed in Eyre street near the railway line at a cost of £2 103. 2. That a water table be formed and culvert laid in Fergusson street near Mr Cobbe's residence, and the small drain in Denbigh street widened at a cost of 30s. 3. That a six inch drain pipe be placed across JQmbolten road opposite the flour mill at a cost of 30s. 4. , That about 13 chains of Sherwill street . be formed and metalled as soon as funds i are available. Nine chains of this distance are in a very bad state and almost ■ impassable for wheel traffic. The cost , would be about £25. 5. With regard to Gillets or Reid's line, owing to recent heavy rain the road has been so much flooded that the Committee were unable , to inspect it, and so nothing could be [ done towards opening it up at present. It is recommended that the matter stand i over till a more conyenient season. The following correspondence was read :— i A petition from the Catholics of Feild« i ing and dietrict, to have the bush cut . down in their portion of the Cemetery, and for permission to take over that por- , tion of the Cemetary alloted by the Govi ernment. From Palmerston Hospital Board to the effect that ±20 17s 6d is the sum due from this Borough for Charitable Aid. From the Mauawatu Railway Company, stating that they are willing to entertain any proposal re increased tram service, should occasion for the same be shown. From The Treasury, Wellington, forwarding subsidy for £26 15s 3d due under the Local Bodies Act 1885. A number of applications from persons wishing to be placed on the rate roll were dealt with by resolution later on. From Dwan Bros, stating that they were informed the Palmerston Gas Co., , were trying to secure the rights for lighting Feilding with gas, which right was applied for by Dwan Bros some time previously, and protesting against the Feilding Council granting the Palmerston people this right, as it was not fair to the writers who originated tie idea, and urging it would not advance the value of property in Feilding to allow an opposition town to control their works, particularly as Feilding was now . likejy to riyal Palmerston. When the Council considered the above, they felt sure the Council would not favour the rival proposal. ■ From the Mayor of Hawera, re erection of a National Memorial to the late Sir H. . Atkinson. ' ' A petition was presented by Mr Carthew, signed by resident in South East, and Russell streets, praying that the Council do construct a railway crossing at Russell street. From Mr W. Stevens, calling the Council's attention to the fact that Mrs Wright's tenancy expires on the 7th November next, when he wishes' to take possession, as he has sold the property...,. From W. G. Shearer, requesting the Council to clear out the water table in front of his section at the corner, of Hobson and Denbigh streets. From T. Evans, drawing the Council's attention to the stagnant water in front of the Wesleyan section, and stating that the Wesleyans are willing to open a drain through the church section, so as to drain the road, as also the section in question, and that tbey are willing to allow the road water to run through, provided the Council will bear half the cost of cutting the drain. •:•.::•■ From the Palmerston Gas Company, offering to erect Gasworks in Feilding on the following terms :— The - Council to grant the right to manufacture and supply gas to the inhabitants for a term of 28 years from the date of the agreement, subject to certain reservations as under. («). The right to purchase at the end of the term, by giving one year's notice of such intention. (J). The right to purchase at the end of 12 years, subject to arbitration on the mean profits of three preceding years. In tbe event of neither of the above purchasing clauses being taken advantage of, the Council to extend the right for a further term of 21 years. The Council to grant the right to erect works upon any land selected. Gas to be supplied for corporation purposes, other than street "lightning, at 33£ per cent, below the price charged to ordinary consumers, the street lighting to be left over for future arrangement, the above allowance of 33 £ per cent, to be taken as a basis of such arrangement. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, eeconded by Cr Lethbridge, That the letters of the Palmerston Gas Company, and Messrs Dwan Bros, re erection of gas works be referred to a committee consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Goodbehere, Morey, Carthew, and Sandilands, to report at the nexfc meeting. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, That the report of the Public Works Committee be adopted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Carthew, seconded by Cr Fowles, That the report of the Finance Committee be adopted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Chamberlain, That the request of the Wesleyan Body for the cutting of a drain through the property of that body situate in Grey street be acceded to, the Council to pay one half the cost thereof. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Gould, That the rations to Mrs Waddington be discontinued until she shall have taken legal steps to compel her near relatives to contribute to her support. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Lethbridge, That the following names be placed on the rate roll : — Isaac Brent (in place of W. Carthew) for section 315, W. T. Bowater (in place of W. A. Collins) for section 351, Victor A. Martin (in place of Mrs Gordon) for. section 86, Mrs W. M. Bray (in place of H. Burrell), C. Bray, juur. (in place of C. Bray, senr.), and G. Y. Lethbridge (in place of F, Y. Lethbridge.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Lethbridge, That all committees be forthwith discharged, and the following committees be appointed : — Public Works Crs Fowles, Chamberlain, and Thompson ; Finance — Crs Carthew, Sandilands, Morey, and Goodbehere ; Cemetery — Crs Gould, Thompson, and Chamberlain. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Chamberlain, That the Rev. Father Patterson be informed that the petition forwarded to the Council cannot be considered tmtil the Borough' Bye-Laws dealing with petitions be complied with. —Carried. ' ' Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Gould, That the sum of £20 17s 6d be sent to the Charitable Aid Board, as requested.— Carried. Proposed by Or Sandilands, seconded by Cr Lethbridge, That the letter, from the Mayor of Hawera, re the Atkinson memorial, be left in the hands of the Mayor to deal with, and that the Town Clerk write to the ' Mayor of Hawera aud inforhi him that the movement has this Council's hearty sympathy. — Carried. ' . Proposed by Or Thompson, seconded by Cr Morey, That the Clerk of Works be
authorised to attend to Mr Shearer's request with power to act. — Carried. Proposed by Or ? Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Letbhridge, That the Mayor's action in settling Mr Pearce's claim for the sum of £5 be endorsed. — Carried.
