Alleged Adulteration of New Zealand Butter

■ , ■ • — -* — (Times Correspondent), It is a long time since Mr Thomas Tipping, general store dealer, of Hyde, refused to make known the name of the firm which foisted upon him a keg of first rate margarine at 137s per cwt, under the designation of.' prime New Zealand' butter: but .though several people have meanwhile tried to obtam the desired information, failure has been the reward of one and all. . The last move was to enlist ; the sympathy and services of Inspector Tpmlin, who conducted the case against Tipping in the local court bat even this official could not persuade the obstinate .little chandler to reveal the identity of the persons from whom he obtained the stuff which eventually brought him face to face with the magistrates. It is somewhat peculiar that the tradespeople in the immediate locality have no notion of the name of the firm which usually supplies Tipping with butter, for Hyde is one of those small Tillages in which people generally know all their neighbours' business. Mr Tip ping's aeigb.b,ours are not curious people. He himself is a discreet body. Having tried so long and so vainly, most of the folk who interested themselves in tbe matter hare decided that the best course is to let tbe whole affair drop and die out of its own in significance. Thanks mainly to the meagre circulation of the journals reporting the case, the trade has not been harmed. Nevertheless, I should have liked to see the guilty narties broueht to book.
