Mr Justin McCarthy's Advisory Committee has decided to make an appeal to Australia for funds to sustain the Parliamentary movement. It is reported that Mr John Morley, the Irish Secretary, contemplates purging Dublin Castle of all permanent officials. It is now believed that Ruby Russell, the actress, found dead in Fnlbam, and who was suspected of having been poi • soned by Mr Heron, with whom she was cohabiting, committed suicide. It is alleged that she discovered that Heron (who committed suicide after her death), had another mistress, in the person of a quadroon from the Senegambia district. The Russians have seized four more British and two American sealers. The annual report of the London School Board shows that free education has only fractionally increased the attendance of children. The Post Office has definitely declined to renew any assistance in the continuance of the San Francisco mail contract, except under Union rates. Mr W. B. Perceval, Agent-General for New Zealand, is seeking an interview with Mr Arnold Morley, Postmaster-General, on the subject. The British and Foreign Anti- Slavery Association, in a memorial to the Marquis of Ripon, Secretary of State for the Colonies, on the proposed introduction of Kanaka labor into Queensland, declare that the stated safeguards are impossible, and they entreat an immediate stoppage of the traffic. Alderman Stuart Knill, a staunch Roman Catholic, has been elected Lord Mayor of London. He refuses to attend the official ceremonies in the Protestant Churches, but expresses his willingness to appoint a locum tenens. On his making this announcement there was great hooting and uproar and much heckling. Several of the speakers predicted a re« turn to popery. It is reported that henceforth the Household Troops are to take part in foreign service. The police believe they have arrested the London 'Jack the Kipper' in the person of Alois Sdemerdzki, an Austrian San Francisco, September 29. Dr Beales, keeper of the Hospital of the Society of Females, has been arrested on a serious charge connected with the institution. It is reported that 40 children are missing. Dr Beales was released on bail, and aided, it is alleged, by wealthy families he escaped. Mrs Montrose, a midwife, who was his accomplice, has confessed. Washington, September 30 The Russians have released one of the sealers which they seized. There are aigns of Russia backing down in the matter. Capetown, September 30, The elections iv Natal show 14 in favour of responsible Government, and 10 against. Mexico, September 30. The Mexican Government propose to initiate a system of reciprocal trade with Canada. Belgrade, September 28. An armed force of masked men stopped a Liberal meeting at Belgrade. The crisis in Servia is acute. St Petersburg, September 28. It is stated that the Tartars at Saratoff have reverted to human sacrifices.
