A Female Fiend

At the Warwickshire Quarter Session on June 28th. Marian Lilian Humphris, wife ol the Rev. Arthur James Humphris, vicar of Warwickshire, was prosecuted by the Society for the Protection of Women arid Children for assaulting Rachel Statfe, a young woman who had been in her employ as domestic servant. The prosecutrix, who appeared to be in feeble health, stated tlisit, she entered defendant's service on February 18;h. There was no other servant and she had to work from five in the mornino 1 until 10 o'clock at night, and often till midnight. The food was locked up, and at times she was kept without any for two days. On Sunday, June *24th, the defendant bear her on the arms and back with a stick, ami on the night of may 19th she forced her to undress and lie on her face on the floor, while she was beating her. On May 25th the defendant af>ain hit her in the similar manner, aud on June 7th she hit her in the face and on the arms and back with a stick Beyond some dry toast for breakfast she gave her no tvod on that or the following day. On June Bth the defendant a^ain threa ened to thra>h her undressed. At midnight she escaped from the house and slept in the garden. Ihe following morningshe was taken to the police station by a woman who i»uud her in the road The Jury found the defendant guilty, and she was sentei.ced to three months' imprisonment, with such hard labour as -h« could perform
