Glove Contest.

. q ■ The above , con test, between H.Laipg, of Wanganui, and M. 6r bell, of Mar ton, took place in the Assembly Booms, Feildmg, on Saturday last. ; The. stakes were J825 a side, Lang unHertalnng Ho knock Orbell out in six . rounds. Hodges was referee, B. J. Gal Way, (timekeeper, Sutherland, of Wanganui, actedqs/Laing's second, and T. Keen, iooked after Orbell. Lang was in the pink pf condition, very fit, and turned the scale at 13st. Orbell look ' very slim beside his ' rival and weighed list 81b. Lairig'was far too clever for his young opponent, and was never hard pressed during the^etfcbunVer. In the first round, Lang had all the best of the fighting, Orbell' making' a mistake in forcing the pace. Orbell received two or three feevere blows, on..the throat and side of the head during the second round, and took his ten seconds twice during it. Laing in the third round 'soon had his opponent done, and ,the Jatter. threw up the sponge. There' was a very large at* tendance, ' and .the proceedings' throughout were of a most orderly ■ character; 'The winner fought very fairly, arid could have punished Orbell considerably had he chosen to "do so. There-w ere two bouts with the gloves between; local men before the big event came on, which were very good exhibitions, and the contestants came in for plenty of applause. Laing has accepted a, challenge from Ned Ryan, of Melbourne, to fight him for and the. afFair will take place in New Zealand shortly-
