Fatal Attempt' to Escape From Custody
(PEB UNITED PBEBB ASSOCIATION). Wellington, This Day. Carl Moeller, furniture dealer, of Weilington, arrested in Sydney on a -charge of obtaining money here by forging an endorsement to a promissory note, made a desperate effort to escape from the steamer Hauroto last 'night, but lost his life in the attempt. About 9 o'clock in the evening when the steamer was off Wellington Heads, Moeller and McGill the constable in charge, were setting on the fore hatch and the flatter left the accused to interview the purser. Moeller , was missed, and a thorough search was made of the vessel, but without discovery of his whereabouts. Early this morning, his body with the cabin lifebelt attached to it, was found •floating near Te. Aro baths.. _^_________
