Obituary

The Golden Bay Argus of August 12th has the following : — Death has again visited our community this week, Mrs Fred Berry, sen. having been taken from our midst. The deceased lady was ailing for a short time, and lately bad a severe attack of erysipelas, which probably conduced to hasten her end, which took place on Wednesday morning at four o'clock, at her son's residence. Mrs Berry, who attained the ripe age of 71 years, 52 of which were spent in this colony, has been identified with this district since the very early days. She arrived in Nelson in the Fifeshire, having previously resided in Wellington for 18 months. Her late husband, who predeceased her by 12 years, was one of the survey staff under Captain Wakefield, and, later, was one of the Wairua Massacre prisoners. He and his family drifted to Colling wood when the diggiugs broke out, and engaged in the hotel business nnd other pursuits in the palmy days. Mrs Berry was of a genial, active temperament, and retained the use of her faculties to a wonderful degree until the last — a true representative of the hardy pioneers of the province. She leaves a family of four sons and three daughters, all of whom, but one, are married. One daughter is the wife of John Bishop, of Feilding and a son, Francis Berry, now resides at Makino. The funeral took place on Sunday August 14th.
