The House and Land Investment Trust wliich has suspended payment, is oon» nected with the London and General Bank (also suspended), of which Mr Jabez Spencer Balfour is chairman. The Daily Telegraph states that the House and Land Trust liability is 2£ million pounds, and that the tofal liabilities of the suspended companies, including the Liberator Permanent Building and In« vestment Society of the London and General BanK, amount to seven million pounds. These failures are severely felt throughout the United Kingdom. Tl\e Trades Union Congress sitting at Glasgow has resolved in favour of the Eight Hours Bill, but permitting trades to withdraw from its provisions when the local Unions demand it. The Congress expelled amid hisses the delegates frnm the Glaseow Harbour Labourers' Union who, it was alleged, had been systematic • scahbers.'
