Commenting on a letter written by Dr Monckton to a contemporary on the sub- j ject of cholera in London in 1854, the Oamaru Mail remarks : — lt would be living in a fool's paradise to fancy that / New Zealand is proof against the ravages of the dreadful epidemics which visits the other side of the globe periodically. The advent of influenza has proved that we are not so highly favored ; and, when influenza can find a footing, we should prepare ourselves for any eventuality. In one respect New Zealand towns are a great deal worse off than towns of the Old World — their drainage iB either nonexistent, or it is bad ; and it is, as everyone should now know, bad drainage, which is the vehicle for the propagation of the dread diseases of the ravages of which we read with a feeling of pity for the victims, whilst we consider that we are beyond the reach of their merciless grasp because we have not yet felt it.
