I Mastebton, September 9. [ A number of residents were proceeded against this morning by the Masterton ! School Committee for not compelling their children to attend school. Fines were imposed in all the cases. Invebcaegill, September 9. The twin infant ■ of Mrs Hislop, widow of Mr John Hislop, long connected with the railway service here, were found dead in their crib this morning, each lying in the same attitude. No inquest was held, Dr Grigor, who had been attending them, stating that they were weakly, and that (he cause of death was convulsions. Auckland, This Day. Mrs Cowan, otherwise known as " Madame Zenobia " was charged at the Police Court with a breach of the Police Offences Act by imposing on Mrs Parker by fraudulent representation to tell her fortune by cards with the view to obtain money. Mr Baume defended, and argued the offence was not within the scope of the Act. The Magistrate said the English clause dealing with palmistry and witchcraft was not included in the Act, and upheld the contention. He dismissed the information.
