Clause 134— Residence to be compulsory. Mr Scobie Mackenzie moved that the conditions of residence sbould not apply to a -person who. while retaining hit bona fides, took up bush or swamp land and made double the improvements upon it and who did not actually reside upon the land. — This was opposed bv the Minister of Lands, and after two hours' debate wa« rejected by 38 to 18.— The clause as amended waa added to the Bill by 39 to 1 -^_____ BI-
