Manchester Road Board
After we had gone to press on Saturday the following business was transacted :— From the Engineer of the New Zealand, Government Railways, Wanganni, offering to sell the Board the railway bridge over the Oroua river for the sura ol j>2loo. For this amount the Commissioners undertake to deck the structure and make it suitable for combined road and railway traffic ; and, also, to form the approaches from the ends of the bridge to a distance of 33 feet from the present centre line of railway-the whole alterations to be completed for road traffic within a period of two months from date of acceptance of this offer. The new railway bridge will be put in hand at once, and would probably be completed within six months, when the rails will be removed from the present bridge, and the structure finally handed over to the °Besolved, That the chairman be authorised to sign the petition to the Hon. the Speaker and the members of the House of Representatives, praying that the subsidy to local bodies be not withdrawn. Resolved, That R. Palke be instructed to erect gates on the road line fenced in by him between Knox street and Quarries road. Resolved, That the Engineer call for tenders for the formation of 15 chains of Yogel street; and that the Halcombe Town Board be asked to pay part of the cost. , Resolved that Mr Freeman be given permission to erect a verandah and hitching post in front of his shop at Ashurst. Resolved, That the name of Charles Crabb be placed o/> the rate roll for sections 3 and4,B; that of M. Byan for 6, X, and part 19, L ; and that ol Thomas Shorthall for 42, sub. H. Resolved, That tenders be called for metalling the Feilding-Ashurst road from the bottom of Terrace to Ashurst and from the top of the cliff for about 35 chains. . . Resolved, That the gravel pits at the junction of the Old Napier road and Ash-tirst-Palmerston road, be fenced in and a notice put up warning persons against taking metal out. Resolved, That in reply to Messrs Goodbehere and Richmond's letter, re Forlong road encroaching on Mr BurrelPs land, they be informed that a tracing has now been received from the Land and Deeds Registry Office, showing the bend that appears on the plan from which Messrs Burrell and Downes titles are taken, should the road have encroached on Mr Burrell's land ; and the matter be left in the chairman's hands to either alter the road or pay for the same. Resolved, That tenders be called for clearing logs and stumps for a 30ft road way along Wyndham street, from Ash-nrst-Feilding road to Salisbury street. Resolved, That the Engineer be instrncted to cal! for tenders for the construction of footpaths in Bunnythorpe, the owners of sections to pay half the cost. Resolved, That the accepting of the tender for building the Orona bridge be held over for a week, and that a special meeting of the Board be held on Friday next, at 2 p.m., to deal with the same. The application of Alex. Bell for the insertion of D. G. Riddiford's name on the rate roll was held over for the latter's consent. Mr McOrea forwarded the Board particulars of his claim of £750—compensation demanded by him in the event of a road running through his property. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
