« The Manchester Rifles will be inspected by Lieut. Col. Newali on Thursday night. The death is announced of Captain Edmund Carr, formerly of the New Zealand volunteer force, which occurred on the 12th inst., at Clayton road, Newcastle upon Tyne. The deceased was in his forty-ninth year. The Defence Minister has agreed to grant the New Zealand Eiflemen attending the New South Wales Bifle Association Meeting in October, free passes on the Government Railway, and give the necessary ammunition free, but declines to appoint an officer to accompany the men.
