From Mrs Hastie, requesting the Council to put a culvert in front of her property in the occupation of Mr Clementeon. GENERAL. The report of the Public Works Committee was read as follows : — 1. With reference to Mr Morey 's application to be allowed to excavate a drain in Bowen street, the Committee recommend that this street be formed from Denbigh to Derby streets — a distance of about 11 chains. This would, the Committee think, do away with the necessity of the proposed drain. 2. With regard to the Queen street drainage, the Committee, after having had the levels taken, find that the water cannot be diverted through section 44 into the Makino stream ; they, therefore, recommend that about three chains of the drain in West street be deepened, and the culvert across Queen street lowered a few inches. It may be necessary to partially fill in a short length of the drain opposite section 42, where the ground lies low. 3. Complaint has been made that the watercourse draining the properties of Messrs Evans, Blackmore, and others, has become chocked, owing to the growth of willows, &c, where it passes through Mr Keen's section, and causes injury. Mr Keen declines to clear out the watercourse, but has no objection to the Council doing so at their own expense, and the Committee suggest that this work be done. Resolved, That the report of the Finance Committee be adopted. Cr Goodbehere considered that where work was recommended to be done by the Finance Committee, estimates of the cost should be put before the Council. Resolved, That clauses 2 and 3 of Public Works report be adopted. Resolved, That the requests of Messrs Cobbe, Wollerman, Chamberlain, Roots and others, be referred to the Public Works Committee and report upon at the next meeting of the Council. Resolved, That the Town Clerk inform those persons requiring culverts placed in front of their properties, of the usual way such work is undertaken by the Council. Resolved, That 11. Robinson's account for a supply of stabs be passed for payment. Resoved, That Mr Morey be empowered to cut a drain through Bowen street provided the Clerk of Works be satisfied that no ill effects will result therefrom. Resolved, That the Clerk of Works be authorized to take steps to prevent damage being done by the Makino in North street, and also to direct such alteration in the swing fence mentioned, as shall prevent further damage by the same.
