Wreck on the Victorian Coast

LOSS OF LIFE. (I'KR PRESS ASSOCIATION.) MiaBoUBNE, August 29. The barque Newtield, 1275 tons, bound from Sharpness to Brisbane with a cargo of salt, ran ashore during tlie rough weather on Sunday near Cardie's River, on tlie Victorian Coast. In a few uiin« ules after she struck fire and a half feet of water was reported in her hold. The curtain (Gr. Scotr) ;>nd 25 men then prepared to land, but one boat was dashed to pieces alongside the wreck, while the other was swamped. The enptain and eight men were drowned ; nine reached tlie shore safely, and the remaining eight are still clinging to the rigging of the ill* fated vessel. This Day. The eight men left on the barque New field were got ashore safely. Those drowned included Capt. Scott, the boatswain, steward, sailmaker, and five seamen. Several of the bodies were re» covered. The catastrophe occurred through the Captain mistaking Nelson's light for King's Island. Several acts of bravery are recorded in the work of rescue. It is understood the cargo is insured in a New Zealand office.
