Important to Old Soldiers
With Reference to a notice that the ] War Office had decided to grant to old soldiers who bad served their country in the Crimean and Indian Mutiny cam paigns a pension in recognition of their past scrnces, although those men were not actually entitled to pension, we have been favoured by Captain Dareney, the officer paying Imperinl pensions at Auck land, with the following circular, sent to J him from the Royal Hospital at Chelsea, . so that all old campaigners may clearly understand how Iheir claims will be con* sidered :— "The Hoyal Hospital, Chelsea (S.W.), July, 1892. The Commissioners of this Hospital are empowered to select for pension old soldiers who received medals for campaigns earlier in time than tbe year 1860, on the following conditions:—l. That the number selected in any one year shall not exceed one hun« dred (Applications from those unsuccessful in any one year may be renewed in January the following year.) 2. That no soldier already pensioned shall be selected ; but, for this purpose, a deferred pension (reward for good conduct^ need not necessarily disqualify. 3. That the soldier be certified by competent local authority to be destitute of mean* of support. 4 '''hat the unforfeited ser vice rendered shall have amounted to ten years. 5. That no soldier discharged with a bad character be selected, unless he suffers from wounds, or be recorded for f»allantry."-Tnranaki Herald.
