Wellington Markets

The New Zealand Lonn and Mer« cantile Agency Company, Limited, report as follows on the produce markets for the week ending Wednesday, 17th August, 1892 :— Wool— Since date of our last report w« are in receipt of London returns by San Fransisco mail, and whilst we hare to record an all-oyer decline in values from similar date of last year, we notice only the decline which has proved excessive is that on merino and inferior or low grade crossbred. Good standard clips have realised, all thing considered, satisfactorily but as was anticipated small clips of inferior or faulty growth have met with indifferent competiton, and realised very low rates. We have before stated oar conviction that il would have been wise for the majority of small growers to haye realised in oar local market, and such, unfortunately proves to have been the case. Later cable advices give as some hope of a revival in values, and it is to be hoped that this will be so. Sheepskins— Our catalogue for the past week has comprised about the average number, which have been readily placed at fair current values. Halfbred skins have sold up to 6s ; dry butcher skins up to 5s 3d each ; country ary crossbreds half wool, 3|d to 4d per 1b; and three* quarter and full woolled up to 6d per lb. Tallow. — There is no change to report in the London market, and local prices are the same as last week's. We quote prime tallow, 18s to 19s ; inferior to good los to 17s ; and rough fat, L2s to 13s 6d per cwt. Frozen Meat.— The following is a cable from our London office, dated 12th inst. : — The market is quiet for frozen mutton. Canterbury is worth 3fd per lb; Wellington is worth 3£d per lb. Frozen Lamb.— Market is firm at sfd per lb. Frozen Beef.— Forequarters, 2fd per lb ; hindquarters, 3£d per lb. Grass Seeds.— -We continue moving off small quantities. There is good enquiry for Poverty Bay seed, also for southern machine dressed at 4s to 4s 6d, and for Poverty Bay 6s to 6s 9d. Pacey's imported, 4s 8i to 4s 9d. Cocksfoot, clean bright seed, 3d to 3|d ; dirty and discoloured, 2d to 2M per lb.
