MYSELT- ATS- DEVERELL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAttSir, — Although Mr Deverell has guessed my profession correctly (if guess it is) he does not admit that my suggestion as to his connection with the leather trade is a correct one. I conclude however that I am right in my suggestion for he still seems unable to keep the subject of boots out of his letter. In this respect he strongly reminds me of Mr Dick in David Copperfield, who could not keep Charles the First's head out of his memorial, and it appears to me that there is no anvil such as he refers to in his letter powerful enough on which to hammer the subject out of his mind. With respect to the rest of Mr Deverell's long letter it seems to me suck "as no man can understand." I appear to have brought a hornet's nest about me, from which however I shall not attempt to defend myself. Although it is not very gracious to find fault with a man's orthography, or ungraramatical expressions (as most of us are subject to slips of that kind), I am curious to know whether the mistakes of your type-setter causes Mr Deverell to say "with all due differonce to his suggestions I will decline it with thanks. I am, etc., Saml. Goodbehere. [The misspelling of the word defference was a printer's error. The second mistake was the author's. — Ed. F.S.]
